What is Ocklawaha Known For?
Although Ocklawaha is a very small town with a tiny population, it has great historical significance. In 1935, the town was the scene of one of the most famous shootouts in the country’s history. The shootout was between the FBI and members of the Barker-Karpis Gang, specifically Fred and Kate “Ma” Barker. The FBI discovered clues that led them to a home being rented by the family in Ocklawaha, and their agents surrounded the house on January 16, 1935. When asked to surrender, Fred and Ma refused and decided to open fire against the FBI with a Tommy gun.
The agents returned fire and were involved in a shootout which lasted for more than 4 hours. Over 500 shots were fired into the Barker residence and over 250 were returned. By the end of the shootout, both Fred and Ma were deceased. During the course of the shootout, locals came to watch the events and even had picnics set up.
Locals and tourists are welcome to visit the Ma Barker House and relive a bit of history in this otherwise quiet community.
